The Mechanical Engineer (M.E.) usually handles all things mechanical including Cabinet and Chassis. He works with the Electrical Engineer to make provision for the Physical User Interface, electrical and data Inputs and Outputs, Maintainance Ports for batteries and accessories, etc. Between himself, the E.E. and the ECB designer, provision for the ECB is made and EMI concerns are addressed.

The Mechanical Bill Of Material is developed by the M.E. who will be communicating with the Purchasing department. Although a BOM may be incomplete, the parts that are settled on should be investigated for long lead times and ordered immediately if needed. "Standard" Lead Times of 8 to 12 weeks may be over two times longer than a small project should take in its entirety.

The M.E. may generate Manufacturing Process requirements which may include Methods/Procedures, Machines and Test Fixtures. Again, lead time problems can arise here if a fixture or machine is required to finish a project.
