The Project Leader insures that the development is following the Product Specifications. The title varies between companies (Project, Product or Program Manager or Leader), and may be assigned to the Engineering Manager or one of the engineers.

All development paths require effective communication with the adjacent development path if the project is to flow efficiently. Methods include email, regular meetings, specific meetings when needed, and the Project Leader "managing by walking around". Much of Project Leading is investigating bottlenecks and complaints, much of which result from poor communication.

Although a "New Product Introduction Specialist" is sometimes available, the Project Leader often begins preparation of the product for manufacturing.

The Project Leader gathers rough electronic and mechanical Bills Of Material which manufacturing requires from the development process. Although a BOM may be incomplete, the parts that are settled on should be investigated for long lead times and ordered immediately if needed. "Standard" lead times may be 8 to 12 weeks, which may be well over the time an entire small project should take. Communication with the Purchasing department should be initiated and maintained.

Engineering may also include Manufacturing requirements for: Again, lead time problems can arise here if a fixture or machine is required to finish a project.
